I&#8217;ve got a personal connection to Dieppe: my father, an American volunteer fighting with Canada&#8217;s Black Watch Regiment, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/atwar.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/22\/in-a-little-known-wwii-battle-a-fathers-experience-becomes-a-daughters-journey\/\">landed on the beach you see above<\/a><\/span> and was among the 1,950 Canadian prisoners taken that day.<\/p>\n<p>Please check out my two pieces for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/atwar.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/22\/in-a-little-known-wwii-battle-a-fathers-experience-becomes-a-daughters-journey\/\">The New York Times<\/a><\/span> about all this!<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#8217;s story&#8211;and my journey&#8211;is<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/atwar.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/22\/in-a-little-known-wwii-battle-a-fathers-experience-becomes-a-daughters-journey\/\">here on At War<\/a><\/span>, the Times&#8217; military blog. There&#8217;s audio from my father and another veteran, and video, too.<\/p>\n<p>This <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/20\/world\/europe\/a-day-for-canadas-fallen-in-a-lesser-known-battle.html\">Dieppe Journal <\/a><\/span>is about the commemoration and the history of the battle itself.<\/p>\n<p>After two failed escape attempts, and several other brushes with death in captivity, my father made it home in 1945.<\/p>\n<p>He considered himself lucky: of the roughly 5,000 Canadians who landed at Dieppe, only about 2,000&#8211;roughly a third of them&#8211;made it back that day. More than 900 Canadians were slaughtered almost immediately; and again, nearly 2,000 were taken prisoner.<\/p>\n<p>So that makes me very lucky too.
